What happens in a Robotic Hair Transplant?

  1. Giving Anaesthesia- The anaesthesiologist provides the candidate with local anaesthesia to numb the surgical sites. After it’s given, the candidate is asked to lie down on his backside on the seat connected to Robot. 
  2. Stretching of the scalp- The surface of the donor site from where the hair follicles are to be extracted is cornered and the scalp is stretched using a tensioner.   
  3. Injection of Tumescent fluid- After the donor area of the scalp is stretched, the scalp skin is more stabilised by the administration of tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is a combination of adrenaline which increases the blood flow to the muscles and helps minimise the wounding of the scalp. 
  4. Use of robot in the harvesting of hair follicles- The surgeon operates the robot and places the robotic arm upon the donor site taking the help of the 3D image of the extraction site. The robot is programmed to remove only follicular units containing 2-3 follicles so that there are minimal holes required to be created for implantation to cover the entire recipient site. It focuses only on the part of the scalp having tensioner with red light being focussed onto the extraction part of the scalp. This even helps the robotic arm to align itself parallel to the direction of hair follicles. During follicular extraction, the robot shows the active target with green light and the next follicular unit for harvest with purple light. On the areas with green light, the robotic arms remove the hair follicles using a specialised micro-punch. Firstly, 0.9mm is used to select the hair follicle units, and then a 1.1 mm blunt punch deeply penetrates the tissues to harvest the graft.     
  5. Implantation of extracted follicular units- The surgeon then makes use of an implanter pen to individually place the harvested follicle units into the recipient site. The donor hair grafts are inserted into the needle of the implanter pen which is later pricked into the skin of the bald or thinning sections of the scalp. These hair grafts are implanted in such a way that the hair part goes inside the scalp while the skin part appears outside. This piece of skin dries after the surgery and falls off in the form of a scab within 10 days of implantation.
